Founder, President and Board Chairman. He was listed by Ebony (magazine) in 2012 as one of America's top 100 most influential African Americans.  He enjoys boating, golf, tennis, fishing, skiing, swimming, chess, helicopters, guitar and website design. His autobiography, "Diary Of An Environmentalist" is available on  He is a 1977 graduate of Wake Forest University.

Derry's Story


Board member.  Wrote the Indian Lands section of the federal coal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.  Was active in Clean Air Act and various toxics-related legislative efforts.  Worked as an energy,  natural resources and environment director for the Environmental Policy Center, Friends of the Earth, Citizens Coal Council and Greenpeace.



Eric Watford, M.D.  

Board Treasurer.  Dr. Watford is a medical doctor.  He graduated from Meharry Medical College, 1984.  Bachelor of Science in Biology from Jarvis Christian College, 1979.  U.S. Navy Assistant Surgeon, 1986-1991.  Private practice.  Medical practice consultant.  Retired.

Dan Durrett

Director, AAEA New York.  Raised in Brooklyn, New York.  Environmental justice advocate with over 25 years of experience in the area. Attended the State University of New York at Binghamton, earning a BS degree in history. I earned my MS degree in history from Clark Atlanta University in 1973. I went on to complete a graduate degree at Emory University in 1976. As a student at Emory, I became interested in the environmental field because of my work in historic preservation and urban environmental issues.  From 1995-1998, I worked with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).  Established several environmental programs while at UNCF (Environmental Justice Education and Research, Strategy for Ecology Education Development and Sustainability).


Ifeanyi Joshua Ezekwe

Director AAEA Nigeria.  Ezekewe established the AAEA Nigeria Office in downtown Lagos, Nigeria in 2005.


Boaz Adhengo

Director AAEA Kenya.  Adhengo established the AAEA Kenya Office in 2010.
